Hurricane Tips And Centre

Before the hurricane season, review measures for keeping drinking water safe.

During an emergency, if the safety of a drinking water supply is questionable protect your health:

  • Boil drinking water for 5-10 minutes;
  • Get bottled water;
  • Treat water with unscented liquid bleach.

Disinfecting with bleach may be more practical than boiling especially when large volumes of treated water are needed and there is no means available for boiling.

Measurement guide for treating water

  • 2 drops of unscented bleach to one quart of water;
  • 8 drops of unscented bleach to one gallon of water;
  • 1/2 teaspoon unscented bleach to five gallons of water.

Before using, let the mixture stand for 30 minutes to allow the chlorine time to kill any harmful organisms.
